  1. Replacing worn-out or damaged Romanian banknotes and coins

The NBR ensures the replacement on demand, without any fee or commission, of Romanian banknotes and coins, issued and still in circulation, which are worn-out or unfit for money circulation (according to the Statute ). The submitted notes and coins are fully reimbursed (100% of the face value) even in the case of missing portions, within the legal limits, but only if they are unreservedly identifiable. Applicants cannot be reimbursed for banknotes and coins that lack more than 40% of their surface or that do not have all identification elements. The replacement will be carried out either at the dedicated counter in one of the mentioned branches or by post. Both in the case of exchanging notes and coins which are no longer legal tender and in that of replacing worn-out or damaged notes and coins, sent by applicants via mail, the postal charges for returning the cash to applicants will be borne by the NBR.

  2. Exchanging currency denomination in circulation until 31 December 2006 (the old Leu)

The polymer-based banknotes and the metal coins in the old currency issue may be exchanged for an unlimited period, without any fee or commission (according to regulations on the redenomination of domestic currency). The damaged items will be replaced under the conditions referred to above.

  3. Selling numismatic coins, medals and other issues

The list containing numismatic coins, medals and items for sale is available at the counters in the above-mentioned branches.
The collection of numismatic issues after 1990 may be accessed under Numismatics.
