Balance of payments and external debt – March 2024
In January - March 2024, the current account posted a deficit of EUR 3,945 mill. compared with EUR 3,964 mill. in the same year-ago period. Non-residents direct investment totalled EUR 2,095 mill., compared with EUR 2,216 mill. YoY. LT external debt at end-March 2024 ran at EUR 129,063 mill., up 6% against end-2023. ST external debt amounted to EUR 48,663 mill., up 0.7% from end-2023.

NBR Board decisions on monetary policy
The NBR Board decided to keep the monetary policy rate at 7% p.a., to leave unchanged the lending (Lombard) facility rate at 8% p.a., the deposit facility rate at 6% p.a. and to keep the existing levels of minimum reserve requirement ratios on both leu- and foreign currency-denominated liabilities of credit institutions.

International reserves – April 2024
On 30 April 2024, the National Bank of Romania’s foreign exchange reserves stood at EUR 62,511 million, compared to EUR 64,279 million on 31 March 2024. The gold stock remained steady at 103.6 tonnes. On 30 April 2024, Romania’s international reserves (foreign currencies and gold) stood at EUR 69,700 million, compared to EUR 71,177 million on 31 March 2024.

Monetary indicators – March 2024
In March 2024, RON loans to non-government sector (68.9% of total) rose by 1.3% month-on-month, whilst foreign currency-denominated loans expressed in RON (31.1% of total) rose by 0.4%. In year-on-year comparison, loans to non-government sector advanced 4.7%, on the back of the 6.4% increase in RON-denominated loans and the 1.1% rise in foreign currency-denominated loans expressed in RON.
