Romanian Leu

Mobile App

Romanian Leu / Leul Românesc is the official NBR app dedicated to Romanian currency (the Leu).

It includes the security and design features of the banknotes and lets the users experience what happens when a banknote is tilted, when a backlight function is used or how the banknote would look if viewed under ultra-violet light. The app also comprises a section on coins in circulation, where details about their technical characteristics (metal, colour, diameter, etc.) are presented.

In addition, mobile device users may visit a webpage with general information about the NBR and play an interactive game which allows them to design a custom-made banknote featuring their portrait.

In March 2023, a new version of the app was released, with the aim of including the 20 lei banknote depicting the portrait of Romanian heroine Ecaterina Teodoroiu and the bani 50 commemorative circulation coins issued between 2010-2019. At the same time, the "Questions and answers" section was updated, including information about the personalities and distinctive elements illustrated on the banknotes in circulation and other interesting details derived from the central bank's money issuing function.

The Leul Românesc app is free and is aimed at the general public that uses mobile devices, cash handlers (retailers, cashiers, etc.), as well as first-time users of leu-denominated banknotes and coins (foreign tourists).

Main sections of the application:

  • Banknotes (security and design features);
  • Coins;
  • About NBR;
  • Game of Portraits – complete a quiz and embed your face on a custom-made banknote.

The app is available to download in Romanian and English for both Apple iOS and Android devices by using the links below or by searching for “LeulRomânesc” directly from the device store.

The Game of Portraits app uses the built-in camera of the device on which it is installed to embed the player’s face on the custom-made banknote. The photos thus taken are stored solely locally, on the device’s internal memory, and third-party access is not permitted. The app user may willingly share/send the picture of the final version of the banknote.
