Numismatic issues dedicated to 100 years since the foundation of the Cantacuzino Institute

Should a numismatic issue fall short of the coins intended for online reservation, please be informed that items may be purchased directly from the counters of the NBR’s regional branches, without reservation, starting 11 October 2021.


Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as of 11 October 2021, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation for numismatic purposes a silver coin and a coppered-tombac coin marking 100 years since the foundation of the Cantacuzino Institute.

Obverse of the silver coin: portrait and name of doctor Ioan Cantacuzino, the vertical inscription “ROMANIA”, the coat of arms of Romania, the year of issue “2021” and the face value “10 LEI”, overlapping the repeated inscription, written in microtext “INSTITUTUL CANTACUZINO”.

Obverse of the coppered-tombac coin: portrait and name of doctor Ioan Cantacuzino, the vertical inscription “ROMANIA”, the coat of arms of Romania, the year of issue “2021” and the face value “1 LEU”, overlapping the repeated inscription, written in microtext “INSTITUTUL CANTACUZINO”.

Reverse common to silver and coppered-tombac coins: the building of the National Institute for Medical and Military Research and Development “Cantacuzino” and the inscriptions “100 DE ANI” and “INSTITUTUL „CANTACUZINO” ”.

The silver and coppered-tombac coins, housed in transparent plastic capsules, will be accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French. Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The maximum mintage of the silver coin is 5,000 coins and that of the coppered-tombac coin is 5,000 coins.

The selling prices are as follows:

  • lei 415.00, VAT excluded, for the silver coin, including the presentation brochure;
  • lei 110.00, VAT excluded, for the coppered-tombac coin, including the presentation brochure.

The silver and coppered-tombac coins marking 100 years since the foundation of the Cantacuzino Institute are legal tender on the territory of Romania.

The coins will be put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, through the regional branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Constanța, Craiova, Iaşi and Timişoara.
